Nuit d’Etoiles

Night of Stars
Night of stars, beneath your veils,Beneath your breezes and your scents,A sad lyre that sighs,I dream of dead loves.
The serene melancholy comes burstingIn the depth of my heart,And I hear the soul of my loveTremble in the dreaming woods.
I see again at our fountainYour gaze, blue as the sky; This rose, it is your breath,And these stars are your eyes.

The Nut Tree
A nut tree blossoms outside the house,Fragrantly, Airily, It spreads its leafy boughs.
Many lovely blossoms it bears,Gentle Winds Come to caress them tenderly.
Paired together, they whisper,Inclining, Bending Gracefully their delicate heads to kiss.
They whisper of a maiden whoDreamed For nights And days of, alas, she knew not what.
They whisper—who can understand So soft a song? Whisper of a bridegroom and next year.
The maiden listens, the tree rustles;Yearning, Musing She drifts smiling into sleep and dreams.

The Sand Man
I wear a fine pair of fur lined bootswith wondrously soft soles,I carry a sack upon my back!Hush, I scamper quickly up the stairs. And when I enter the chamberThe children are saying their prayers:Two little grains of my sandI scatter into their eyes,Then they sleep the whole nightWatched over by God and the angels. Two little grains of my sandI scattered into their eyes:The good little children should be visitedBy a beautiful dream. Now rapidly and swiftly with my sack and my stickback down the stairs!I can no longer stand around idly,I must still visit many [children] tonight. There you are already nodding off and laughing in your dreams,And I barely opened my little sack.

Du bist wie eine Blume

Du bist wie eine Blume,
So hold und schön und rein;

Aufs Haupt dir legen sollt’,
Betend, dass Gott dich erhalte
So rein und schön und hold.
You are Like a Flower

You are like a flower,
So sweet and fair and pure;
I look at you, and sadness
Steals into my heart.

I feel as if I should lay
My hands upon your head,
Praying that God preserve you
So pure and fair and sweet.

Come Raggio di Sol

Come raggio di sol
mite e sereno,

Like a sunbeam,
mild and serene,
upon placid waves seeks repose,
whilst within the sea’s deep clutches
a tempest lies hidden:

So a blithe and calm smile sometimes lets one’s lips exude contentment,
midst the hidden sufferings
of a wounded heart.

It Moves like a Melody
It moves like a melody,
Gently through my mind;
It blossoms like spring flowers
And wafts away like fragrance.

But when it is captured in words,
And placed before my eyes,
It turns pale like a gray mist
And disappears like a breath.

And yet, remaining in my rhymes
There hides still a fragrance,
Which mildly from the quiet bud
My moist eyes call forth.
